Rotary and Mount Alvernia

The Rotary Club of Gibraltar is providing Mount Alvernia residents with cooking facilities of their own. Originally, Mount Alvernia Occupational Therapy and Activities section contacted the Rotarians to see if the Club could help The Friends of Mount Alvernia with the purchase of a domestic cooker for the residents to use. This is becauseThe residents are not allowed to use the main kitchens and its appliances.

The idea is that this new cooker would be used for producing cakes and other 'goodies' that the residents themselves could then sell at their own fund-raising events. This would be along with other items that they make under the supervision of the occupational therapists. The therapists are also looking into the possibility of allowing some of the more able residents a chance to entertain their own families to the occasional Sunday lunch. Rotary has been happy to provide funds for such a worthwhile project.

The Club away-day to Seville was very enjoyable, with seven Rotarians, one Honorary Member, nine guests and Uncle Winston (!) attending. A relaxing and stress-free day where we saw and had explained the sites and wonders of a beautiful city. The river trip was good (maybe not for the maritime inspectors within our party – 100 plus passengers on-board, with only 70 lifebuoys and a few floats, no life jackets and only two crew manning the craft? – would not have happened in Gibraltar!!!) but we didn’t allow that to spoil our trip.

Rotary and 'Lola's Boys'

The Rotary Club of Gibraltar has booked a charity fundraising gala performance for later this month. The popular West End singing duo 'Lola's Boys' have been steadily making a name for themselves internationally and Rotary are delighted to welcome them to Gibraltar.

The event will take place on Friday 30th September at 8pm and the venue will be beside the pool at The Rock Hotel. Tickets (which also include a welcome drink and a three-course dinner) are £45 per person

and all proceeds will go to the Rotarians' local charities. The event has been sponsored by Bright Co.Ltd. and The Priority Freight Company to whom Rotary are extremely grateful. The Rotarians ask that people

regard the evening as a 'black tie' occasion.

Peter Gray Award

The Peter Gray Award for the best attendance during the year has had an additional plaque added to it in memory of Maurice Featherstone 1923-2011. Maurice was a frequent winner of the best attendance record.

This year the award has been presented to Sylvia for her excellent attendance on all matters Rotary during 2010-11. Congratulations to Sylvia

For our newer members, Peter Gray was a past District Governor for District 1120 and was a very good friend of the Club and a frequent visitor.

Tarik donates to Rotary

The Rotary Club of Gibraltar has recently been delighted to receive a donation of £250 from the Tarik Ship Agency, one of Gibraltar’s best known maritime suppliers. In the past Tarik has supported a number of Rotary’s environmental and charitable projects and although there are no 'strings attached' to this most recent donation, it is worth special mention.

The donation became apparent when the Rotary President received a letter from Tarik Ship Agency. He has had in the past many dealings with the company both in his role as Chief Surveyor, as a consultant and as a supporter of our Club.
